Quantum hiring: why the shortlist is done in a day
There are perhaps sixty senior quantum engineers and research scientists in the country. Every one of them is known. Every senior search in this sector is a named-target campaign with the shortlist compiled before the brief is written.
Australia’s senior quantum-computing pool is one of the smallest specialist markets we track. Perhaps sixty engineers and research scientists nationally with commercially relevant depth. Most of them are affiliated - currently or recently - with one of a small set of firms and research groups: Silicon Quantum Computing, PsiQuantum’s Australian operation, Q-CTRL, a handful of university spinouts, and the CQC2T research base that seeded most of the current commercial talent.
If you are a founder or hiring lead at a quantum firm and you have not already met the candidate you eventually hire, you are unlikely to hire them inside six months.
What the search actually looks like
The shortlist for a senior quantum-hardware role is usually compiled inside twenty-four hours. Not because the recruiter is fast, but because the candidate universe is finite and known. There is not a wider funnel to explore - the funnel is the map.
What takes twelve to twenty weeks is not identification. It is engagement. The senior candidates are not looking. Most are working on scientifically interesting problems, at firms that raised well, with equity that is finally starting to matter. The move-off is not commercial. It is scientific and directional - the roadmap has to be better, the founding team more credible, or the class of problem more compelling. Compensation is a hygiene factor. The candidate has to want to work on your specific problem.
For candidates: why the interesting roles find you, not the other way around
If you are a senior quantum engineer or research scientist in Australia, the roles worth having will find you. That is not a comforting piece of advice - it is a statement of how thin the market is. When a company decides to hire, someone in the network - a recruiter, a former manager, a founder you know socially - almost certainly gets in touch within a fortnight. If you are seeing zero inbound, the issue is usually one of two things: your public profile does not describe your work with enough specificity, or you have been declining conversations often enough that people have stopped calling.
Two practical things.
Make your LinkedIn precise about the class of problem you have shipped or published in. “Quantum hardware engineer” gets scanned past. “Cryogenic RF control for silicon-spin qubits, publications in Nature Nanotech and PRX” gets calls. Precision is the signal.
Take the first call even when you are not moving. The purpose of the first call is not to change your job. It is to keep you legible - to make sure the recruiter still knows what class of problem you would consider for the right team. Miss enough of those calls and you fall off the list.
For clients: why “advertising” a quantum role is a category error
Every quarter we get a client who wants to write a job ad for a senior quantum role. We advise against it every time. Two things happen when you advertise.
First, the applicants are systematically weaker than the candidates you would reach through the network. This is not always true across sectors - it is very close to always true in quantum, because the strong candidates are not looking. The applicant funnel is dominated by candidates trying to move sideways or up from adjacent research work, and they are usually not what the founder actually needed.
Second, the ad signals to the network that your internal network came up empty. In a candidate pool of sixty people, that signal reaches most of them inside a week. It reduces the plausible-inbound rate for you specifically.
The playbook is straightforward. Map. Sequence. Engage. Take the interested candidates seriously and quickly. Compensate at or above US-firm-with-Australia-relocation packages. Move fast when a candidate says yes because a rival firm is offering the same thing next quarter.
Quantum is where the tightest specialism, the smallest pool and the most competitive international recruiting come together. It is the sector where naming and sequencing matter most.
