Where the energy transition meets cleared work
There is a specific class of engineer we are placing more often than we were two years ago. They came from grid infrastructure, they moved into cleared work, and they are one of the most valuable and hardest-to-find hybrid profiles in the current market.
Two markets we cover heavily - Energy & Climate Technology and Defence & National Security - have started to overlap in a way that was not visible three years ago. The overlap is producing a specific candidate profile that is unusually valuable and unusually rare. This piece is for the engineer sitting on one side of that overlap wondering whether to cross into the other, and for the hiring lead trying to understand why their search for this profile has been running for six months.
The specific profile
The candidate we are increasingly asked to find has a career shape that looks like this. They started in power systems, grid connection or transmission engineering, probably at a network operator or a large infrastructure firm. They spent five to eight years there and built serious depth. Then, in the last two to five years, they moved into a cleared or defence-adjacent role - protecting critical infrastructure from cyber threats, working on power resilience for defence installations, or supporting energy security for cleared facilities.
The overlap is real work. It is not a rebrand. The problems are legitimately hybrid.
Why the overlap is growing
Two things are pushing the market into the crossover.
Critical infrastructure protection is now a policy priority, and the policy priority is producing real hiring at scale. Cyber threats to grid infrastructure, water infrastructure and telecommunications are being taken more seriously by state and federal agencies. The engineers who understand both the grid domain and the cleared-environment operating model are the ones getting the work.
The energy transition is producing new kinds of infrastructure that need protecting. Distributed grid architectures, storage systems, EV charging networks - these are all new attack surfaces. The people building them and the people protecting them have historically been different populations. The overlap is now becoming a real career track rather than a coincidence of individual careers.
The candidate math
The realistic Australian pool for this profile - senior grid or power systems engineer with credible cleared experience - is small. We can name most of them. It is probably fifty people nationally. Half are not moving. Of the moving half, most are being aggressively courted by three or four different types of employer: the defence primes, the network operators, the specialist infrastructure protection firms, and one or two consulting firms that have built a practice in the space.
The compensation is moving fast in response. Base salaries for a senior engineer in this profile with active NV1+ are into the same range as senior software or cyber leadership. Total-comp packages at some of the specialist firms are approaching the top of what we see in comparable Sydney tech roles.
For candidates considering the move
If you are currently in energy infrastructure and considering the move into the cleared or defence-adjacent side, three practical things.
The move is easier at senior level than junior level. Cleared processes value the depth of your existing domain expertise. Your grid experience is not something you leave behind - it is the reason you get the role. Move too early in your career and you will be a junior clearance-getter. Move at the right time and you are a senior specialist with a rare combination.
The clearance is a real time investment. Everything we wrote about sponsorship applies here too. If you are moving into a role that requires an active clearance you do not yet have, plan for six to nine months of adjustment work before you are fully in the role.
The work is often more compelling than you expect. Engineers who make this move usually describe the mission-orientation of the cleared side as more energising than the grid work they left. Not always. But often.
For clients looking for this profile
Three practical things.
Do not run the search as an energy search. If you brief a search into your usual energy candidate pool, you will find generalist grid engineers who do not have the cleared depth you need. If you brief the search into your usual cleared cyber pool, you will find cyber engineers who do not have the grid depth you need. The search has to be run into the overlap deliberately.
Compensate for both dimensions. The candidate you want is not a discounted senior grid engineer. They are a premium hybrid specialist. Bands should reflect that.
Take the timeline seriously. This search runs sixteen to twenty-two weeks in our experience. It is not a fast fill.
