The CV that gets a chip-design recruiter to actually call you back
Silicon designers routinely tell us their CV "is out there" and nothing happens. The problem is usually not that they are being ignored. It is that the CV is not giving the recruiter the signal they need to justify the call internally.
Semiconductor talent in Australia rarely has to hunt for work. Most senior IC designers we speak to have three inbound conversations a month by default. Occasionally a designer will tell us their CV is “out there” and nothing is happening. Almost every time we look at that CV the same three issues are visible. This piece is for the designer who has a CV that is not doing its job.
The one line that gets a recruiter to open the file
Recruiters covering silicon in Sydney scan CVs at about six per minute during initial screening. They are looking for two things: what nodes and what silicon. The single most important line on your CV is the one that establishes both.
Something like this works:
“Led verification of a 28 nm RFIC transceiver design for [firm’s segment]; taped out to production Q3 2024, shipping in [product family].”
Notice what that line does. It names a specific node. It names a specific silicon type. It anchors a specific tape-out. It puts you inside a specific commercial delivery. In one line the recruiter now knows exactly what shelf of experience to put you on and can decide within seconds whether you fit an open brief.
Compare it with the version we see far too often: “Led verification for a mixed-signal design team on multiple projects across analog and digital domains.” That line is factually accurate but it does not give the recruiter anywhere to file you.
The three fixes that account for most of the difference
Anchor to silicon, not to activity. Verification, physical design, DFT, RTL - all matter, but recruiters need silicon anchor points to be confident placing you into a brief. If you can name the tape-outs you touched, name them. Confidentiality often prevents naming the product - name the node, the process, the vendor and the general application segment. That is enough.
Chronological, not thematic. We regularly see CVs organised around themes - “Analog work”, “Verification work”, “Team leadership”. These are hard to read. Chronological CVs work because the recruiter can see the shape of your career and infer things about tenure and progression without having to reconstruct them. If you are worried about a short stint or an odd gap, the answer is a short line of context inside the chronological entry, not an alternative structure.
Two pages, not five. Silicon CVs run long because designers list every tool they have touched. Nobody reads that list. What we care about is whether you have shipped, at what node, and with what team size. If you cannot compress your CV to two pages, you have not yet decided what matters.
What we do not care about
We do not need your undergraduate GPA. We do not need a list of every EDA vendor whose software you have opened. We do not need your certifications from 2011. We do not need a personal-statement paragraph. If those things are on your CV, you are asking the recruiter to work harder on your behalf than they need to. In a market this thin, they will not.
One test
Send your CV to the strongest engineer you worked with in your last role - not the strongest manager, the strongest peer engineer. Ask them: “If you were hiring senior IC designers, would you call me from this?” Their answer tells you everything you need to know. If they hesitate, you have work to do. If they say yes without pausing, you probably do not need a recruiter’s help at all - the next role will find you.
