The quiet aerospace hiring boom nobody is writing about
Everyone talks about defence, semiconductors and quantum. Meanwhile the Australian civilian aerospace sector has been running a very serious senior hiring cycle for eighteen months. It is one of the tightest specialist markets we cover.
The Australian aerospace and aviation sector is not in the top three when technology journalists write about the local specialist hiring market. Defence gets the coverage. Semiconductors get the coverage. Quantum computing gets the coverage. Aerospace is quietly running one of the most consequential senior hiring cycles in the country and almost nobody outside the sector is watching.
This piece is a short read on what we are seeing and why it matters.
What is actually happening
Three distinct pieces of activity are converging.
The commercial aerospace maintenance-and-modification tier - the firms doing MRO, avionics upgrades and specialist retrofits for civilian aviation - has been growing steadily and consistently since the international travel recovery. The senior systems engineers, certification specialists and licensed aircraft maintenance engineers who anchor this work are in short supply nationally.
The uncrewed aerial systems tier - both civilian and dual-use - has expanded substantially. The engineers building autonomous flight systems, sensor payloads and ground control infrastructure for these platforms are competitive with cleared defence hires on compensation and often overlapping with the same candidate pool.
The space-adjacent tier - the small but growing set of Australian firms building launch vehicles, satellite subsystems, ground infrastructure or space-related software - is hiring senior aerospace and systems engineers at a rate the local market has not previously supported. Most of these firms are still small but they are hiring senior specialists at compensation levels the traditional aerospace industry has not paid.
Add these three and you have a hiring market that is meaningfully tighter than the surface headlines suggest.
Where the pressure is greatest
The specific roles under most pressure right now, based on what we are being asked to find:
Certification engineers with recent commercial experience. The pool is thin, the airworthiness workload is high, and the salaries have moved materially in the last twelve months.
Senior systems engineers who can work across mechanical, electrical, avionics and software domains. This is the classic aerospace systems generalist profile and the pool is genuinely small.
Licensed aircraft maintenance engineers, particularly with type ratings on the aircraft types that are currently in short supply. The salaries here have moved sharply.
Software and systems engineers with autonomous flight or unmanned systems experience. The overlap with defence recruiting on this profile is significant.
The under-tapped candidate pool
One thing we consistently see: Australian aerospace scaleups often overlook a candidate pool that would be obvious to their equivalents in other sectors. Engineers who trained in aerospace but moved into commercial software, robotics or scaleup engineering in the last five to eight years. Many of them would seriously consider a return to the sector if the technical problem was compelling enough.
The mistake is filtering these candidates out because their most recent role was not in aerospace. The right question is not “have they been in aerospace recently” - it is “do they still have the domain instincts”. Usually they do.
For hiring leads
Three practical things.
Recognise that you are competing with defence for a significant fraction of the profiles you want. The compensation and the security signal at the primes has moved. Your offer needs to be calibrated to that reality.
Do not run this as a low-conviction search. The pool is small enough that a search perceived as low-conviction gets discounted by candidates fast.
Take the candidates who left the sector seriously. The return-to-aerospace path is real and is one of the ways this specific hiring cycle gets absorbed.
For candidates in adjacent domains
If you have an aerospace background and are currently in commercial software or robotics, this is a good moment to consider whether an aerospace-adjacent role would be interesting again. The technical problems are broader than they were five years ago and the compensation has moved. Take the first call. It is worth an hour to understand what is available.
